About Zilxi

Overview

This medication is used to treat moderate to severe acne. Minocycline belongs to a class of drugs known as tetracycline antibiotics. However, it is not used to treat skin infections. It helps decrease pimples and red bumps that happen with acne.

How to use

Read the Patient Information Leaflet and Instructions for Use provided by your pharmacist before you start using minocycline foam and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Apply this product as directed by your doctor, usually once daily, at least 1 hour before bedtime. Do not bathe, shower, or swim for at least 1 hour after application.

Before first use, allow the container to warm to room temperature. Do not warm up this medication any other way such as by heating in the microwave or placing in hot water. Wash your face gently with mild cleanser, rinse with water, and pat dry. Shake the container well before each use. Remove the cap, then press the top of the can to dispense a small amount of foam (about the size of a cherry) onto your fingertips. Apply and gently rub the foam into the affected area(s) on your face. If you also have acne on other parts of your body (such as your neck, shoulders, arms, back, or chest), also apply the foam to these areas. Wash your hands after applying this medication. This product may stain fabric.

This medication is for use on the skin only. To avoid irritation, do not let this medication come into contact with your eyes, inside your nose/mouth, or any broken skin (such as cuts, scrapes, rashes). If you do get the medication in those areas, flush the area with cool water.

This product is flammable. Avoid fire, flame, and smoking during and right after applying this medication.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same time each day.

Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse.

Side effects

Skin redness, dryness, or itching may occur. Skin darkening that may be due to acne can also occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Although these effects are unlikely when this medication is applied to the skin, serious side effects have rarely occurred with minocycline taken by mouth. Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: joint stiffness/pain/swelling, signs of kidney problems (such as change in the amount of urine), signs of liver problems (such as loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes/skin, dark urine), discoloration of skin/scars/lips/gums, yellow-gray-brown tooth discoloration.

Minocycline, when taken by mouth, may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea) due to a type of resistant bacteria. This condition may occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment has stopped. Tell your doctor right away if you develop: diarrhea that doesn't stop, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, blood/mucus in your stool.

Do not use anti-diarrhea or opioid medications if you have any of these symptoms because these products may make them worse.

This medication may sometimes cause oral thrush or a new yeast infection. Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge, or other new symptoms.

Minocycline may rarely cause a serious increase in pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension-IH). The risk of this side effect is greater for women of childbearing age who are overweight or who have had IH in the past. If IH develops, it usually goes away after minocycline is stopped; however, there is a chance of permanent vision loss or blindness. Get medical help right away if you have: a headache that is severe or doesn't go away, vision changes (such as blurred/double vision, decreased vision, sudden blindness), nausea/vomiting that doesn't stop.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: fever, new or worsening lymph node swelling, rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

In the US - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 or at www.fda.gov/medwatch.

In Canada - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to Health Canada at 1-866-234-2345.
