Overview

This medication is used for relief of mouth sores (such as those caused by canker sores, cold sores, braces, radiation treatment, cancer treatment). It may also be used for the temporary relief of mouth pain due to procedures such as dental cleaning, tooth extraction, or removal of tonsils or the uvula (the small bit of flesh hanging down in the back of your throat). This drug comes in a dental paste that allows it to stick to the inside of the mouth/cheeks/gums. It works by forming a protective layer to help prevent further irritation and pain.

How to use

Do not apply this medication in the eyes or on the skin. Use it only inside the mouth.

Use this product as directed by your dentist or doctor. The dosage and directions for use are based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Different brands of this medication have different directions for use. Carefully follow your doctor or dentist's directions for using this product.

Although not intended to be swallowed, this medication is safe if swallowed.

Avoid eating or drinking for at least 1 hour after use.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at the same times each day. Do not increase your dose or use this product more often or for a longer time than directed by your doctor or dentist. Do not use more than 8 teaspoonsful (40 milliliters) a day.

Tell your doctor or dentist if your condition persists or worsens.

Side effects

This medication usually has very few side effects. However, if this medication is swallowed, constipation may occur. If you have any unusual effects, tell your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor or dentist has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Before using sucralfate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

This product is safe to use during pregnancy when used as directed.

It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. However, it is unlikely to pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Storage

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep this product tightly closed. Keep all medications away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company.

Overdose

Missed Doses:

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Use your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.
